Spain’s back to normal, slowly but surely. It is three months since the lockdown began and there has now been some lifting of restrictions in Spain’s reopening plan. Starting 21st June, life will be easier for people living in and travelling to Spain. We outline here what the easing of restrictions could mean for you from Sunday onwards.
First and most importantly, you can now fly to Spain and no quarantine is required. We trust that the quarantine imposed to those entering or returning to the UK due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) is lifted soon.
Spain will reopen its borders with all European Union and Schengen-area countries and EU travellers arriving in Spain from that date will no longer be required to stay in quarantine for two weeks. 70% of Spain is now in Phase III of de-escalation, with the final extension to the state of alarm ending on Sunday 21st June when free movement will be possible across the entire country.
Phase III is the final step before arriving at the ‘new normal’ and means that shops, restaurants, open air markets, sport venues, tourist attractions, places of worship, cinemas, theatres, and similar spaces can carry out their activities provided physical distance and all other hygiene measures are observed.
Face Masks must be used when travelling by transport, such as the subway, bus, plane or train, as well as in public or private places – closed and open – where a physical distance of 1.5 metres cannot be kept.
On the judicial front, during the lock-down, Spanish courts have been carrying out essential activity only, and trials and preliminary hearings on claims against Spanish banks have been cancelled until very recently where some courts are just starting to resume them. It is true that Covid-19 has transformed the way we live and we have been very busy supporting our clients on their property, legal, tax and financial arrangements during this period. Some have decided to sell, despite this being a buyers’ market, others to renegotiate their mortgages and some others to give their properties to the children.
Working from home being the new normal, and assuming they may be a second lock down in the near future, we are very pleased to see some of you making plans to relocate to Spain. It is true that Spain is still an attractive and desirable destination. Looking at the tax impact of relocation we keep recommending the “Beckham rule”, which we have successfully obtained for many of our clients.
